Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
