The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
