Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by a single point after his victory in Mexico City recently, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, sitting 36 points behind behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he rotated at corner four early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a slight brush of the wall. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, rotating twice through the fast downhill Mergulho corner leading to the final bend on to the start-finish straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th place, trailing team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, over half a second off the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
