The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
